Classified Staff

Upon initial appointment, individuals hired into the classified system are placed at step 1 of the respective grade for the classification in which they are hired.  If the department has a need to bring an individual into classified service at an accelerated step, higher then step 1, they must complete and get approval on a “Request to accelerate salary” form prior to offering the position to the prospective employee.  For further assistance and information regarding classified initial rates of pay, please refer to NAC 284.170 and NAC 284.204 or contact Business Center North Human Resources at 775-784-6844.

Academic Faculty

Salary schedules for 9-month (“B” contract) and 12-month (“A” contract) academic faculty include four ranks at Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor.   New hires typically start at the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank.  However, if a search advertises for and receives applicants qualified for higher ranks the new hire may be placed into the higher rank.  Tenure upon hire is only awarded with approval by the Board of Regents.

Administrative Faculty

Administrative faculty are clustered by level of responsibility, rather than by rank, and placed within one of seven salary ranges. Placement within a salary range is based upon eight weighted factors and by a comparison of the position with other positions in that range.

The Administrative Faculty Salary Placement Committee, appointed by the President and representing the major divisions in which administrative faculty are employed, recommends to the Provost placements within the model.

Factors for Administrative Faculty Salary Range Placement (% Weight)

  • Complexity of Problems to be Solved (10%)
  • Minimum Skills and Knowledge Required (10%)
  • Interpersonal Relationships Ordinarily Involved in Day-to-Day Activities (10%)
  • Organizational Levels at which Interpersonal Relationships Ordinarily Occur (10%)
  • Nature of Responsibility Exercised within the Context of the Overall Operations of the University (20%)
  • Extent of Functional Responsibility Exercised (10%)
  • Constraint on Independent Action within which the Position Functions (10%)
  • Impact of Independent Actions on the Attainment of Goals for Educational Programs and/or Institutional Development (20%)

New or vacant positions should be reviewed prior to any search to determine the appropriate salary range for the position.  A Position Description Questionnaire (PDQ) should be created or updated at least every three years for this purpose.  All administrative faculty positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree.  When writing a new PDQ, you may obtain assistance by reviewing the Salary Model and or contacting Faculty Human Resources.

A separate Executive Salary Schedule is established by NSHE for Dean and above administrators.

Student Employees

The student classification and compensation system is designed to establish consistent hiring and pay practices for all student employees throughout the University.

Employees hired above the maximum classification wage may be eligible for employment through the State classified employment system. The level and salary of a position should be a result of job responsibilities, supervision needed, and level of expertise required for the job. For example, many positions on campus are clerical in nature and require basic office skills. Such positions would fall under the Student Worker I classification. Positions requiring additional experience, knowledge, or skills would be assigned to higher classifications. The examples listed in each job classification may serve as a guide. Departments who want assistance in determining the appropriate level and pay scale may contact Student Employment staff at Human Resources.
