Tutoring at Upward Bound
Description of the program
Tutoring is an essential service offered FREE of charge to participants of the Upward Bound (UB) Program. We require all students in their first year with UB to attend 1 hour of tutoring each week. We also require students who fall below a 3.0 GPA to attend 2 hours of tutoring each week until they bring their grades up to a 3.0 level. We also offer tutoring in SAT & ACT and to those students who would like additional assistance in specified subjects.

The Upward Bound Tutoring Staff at the University of Nevada, Reno:
Dominique Ziech, Upward Tutor Coordinator. Dominique joined our staff in September of 2008. Dominique brings a unique and much-needed skill set to our program. She has earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has lived in Chilé and is bilingual in Spanish and English. Dominique assists in overseeing the logistics of our tutoring program, supervises tutoring sessions, and tutors students on an as-needed basis. UB tutors. Our trained tutors are undergraduates and graduate students at the University of Nevada, Reno. All tutors are required to have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA. Many of our tutors are UB alumni or are participants in TRIO Scholars or McNair Scholars at the University of Nevada, Reno. Our tutors are committed to helping our UB students and serve as role models on a daily basis.

UB Tutoring Locations:
Tutoring services are offered on the university campus for students from schools within Washoe County School District and at their respective schools for students in Lyon and Douglas County School Districts.

Parking, Transportation, & Safety
Driving….
If you drive you to campus for tutoring, you can obtain a temporary parking permit for the Brian Whalen Parking Garage from the tutor coordinator, Dominique Ziech. This pass will be given to you upon your arrival to tutoring. YOU MUST PARK IN THE WHALEN GARAGE IF YOU HAVE TUTORING BEFORE 5PM. After 5pm, the passes allow you to park in the Cain Hall parking lot outside the UB offices.
Taking the Bus….
Free, short term bus passes are available for any student who rides the bus to tutoring at the the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Request a bus pass from the front office staff or the tutor coordinator.
Always stay safe…..
If you attend tutoring in the evening, the University of Nevada, Reno provides a free campus escort service that will pick you up at any of our tutoring locations and will drive OR walk you to your car or bus stop. Campus Escort operates between the hours of 5:00pm and 1:00am to ensure the safety of University students, staff, and visitors. Campus Escort: (775) 742-6808. Mandatory Tutoring Policies
The Upward Bound Program is pleased to provide tutoring to help you achieve academic success. This success is achieved through self discipline and responsibility. Therefore, it is mandatory that you provide us with a firm commitment to the tutoring service. In return for your firm commitment, outlined below, UB agrees to provide a safe and effective study environment with knowledgeable tutors.

Class with a “C” or lower: For each core class grade of a “C” or lower on the monthly progress report, a student is required to attend a one hour per week tutoring session. The student must complete and sign a contract with the tutor for each subject in which s/he is receiving tutoring.
Core GPA below a “B” average: If the accumulative GPA a student receives for core classes falls below 3.0 (a “B” average) on the first semester report card, the student is placed on Academic Probation. The student will be required to attend two hours per week of tutoring in order to improve their comprehension in academic classes and / or work on study skills to be more efficient and effective in the classroom.
First Year Academic Monitoring: ALL students in their 1st year with UB will be required to attend one hour of tutoring per week. Freshman will be released from monitoring if their first semester accumulative GPA in core classes is a 3.0 (a “B” average) or higher. If the accumulative GPA in core classes is below a 3.0, the student will be placed on Academic Probation.
Missing A Tutoring Session: Students will attend mandatory tutoring until UB receives notification of an improved grade on the progress report. Any missed tutoring session requires a written excuse from a parent, doctor, coach, or other appropriate staff person. This excuse must be turned in within one week following the absence. Please turn notes in to the Tutor Coordinator or Counselor.
A reminder to current students: your participation in tutoring is an important component of the program. Your monthly stipends are contingent upon your participation, attendance, and attitude in tutoring. Failure to comply with the above policies can result in suspension of tutoring privileges and loss of monthly stipend monies.
