Outstanding Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor (08)
Purpose: To recognize and show appreciation of the undergraduate research mentorship effort of UNR faculty members. Nominations for the first award were sought in Fall 06 and the first recipient was selected in Spring 2007.
Eligibility: All UNR academic faculty with 0.5FTE or more appointment.
Award Frequency: Up to one faculty mentor per year.
Award Form and Presentation: Cash award of $2,000 and a certificate, both presented at the Honor the Best event, or the equivalent, held typically in May.
Nomination: Sought in October-November from the deans, through a nomination letter justifying the selection. One nominee is sought per college. Additional nominations may be made by the Office of Undergraduate Research from the pool of faculty mentors with extraordinary level of undergraduate researcher mentorship. The nominees should submit the following supporting documents:
- A summary statement by the candidate explaining her/his undergraduate research mentorship activities. The statement is limited to one page.
- Full resume.
- A list of undergraduate students mentored by the nominee, the title of their projects, duration of research, and approximate number of hours of research per week conducted by each student.
- List of publications/exhibitions resulting from undergraduate research.
- Two reference letters from peers, at least one from a UNR faculty member. These letters are in addition to the nomination letter by the dean.
- Full name and current contract information for up to three former undergraduate researchers supervised by the candidate. The selection panel will contact these individuals for additional information.
To facilitate the review process, please be sure to submit the material in the order shown.
Selection: A panel of five most recent recipients of the award selects the recipient of the award each year. The chair is the earliest recipient of the award who is on the panel. The selection panel for the first few years may include other members until a sufficient number of past recipients exists to form the review panel. The selection process is to be completed by the end of March. The panel may choose not to grant an award if the candidates’ pool does not meet the panel’s minimum expectations.
