Tips for Mentors
You will play a critical role in making the undergraduate research proposal and the project successful. Please note the following points before you write the letter of support:
- Be sure you are familiar with the student's capability and that the student has a reasonable chance of success before agreeing to serve as a mentor.
- The letter of support serves two purposes: one to indicate that you are clear on what the research project is going to be and approve of the proposal and the research, and the other is that, by endorsing the proposal, you are committing to mentor the student in the course of the project.
- Your mentorship begins at the proposal preparation stage. Please be available to guide the student in putting the proposal together. Review the proposal and recommend improvements related to content and the format.
