Student Comments

Here are some of the comments by students who have gone through the experience of undergraduate research:

"I would recommend that all students wanting to get into research apply for the award. It looks great on the CV and will definitely help you and your lab during your project."

" Because research in my field of German literature is so esoteric to American universities, it was only possible to find the resources I needed abroad. Not only did the award make my research possible, but it also introduced me to the grant proposal writing process with which I must be familiar for my academic and scholarly career."

" I am greatly honored to have received the Honors Undergraduate Research Award. I highly enjoyed the amazing learning experience of conducting research."

" Receiving the Undergraduate Research Award helped me immensely. I'm going to present my research at a large convention and without this money I don't think I would be able to go. Also, just knowing that others feel my research is worth funding and supporting means a lot to me. It gives me the confidence to keep going."

" I really enjoyed being able to show my advisors the progress made and our vision realized. I would absolutely recommend to others that they apply for the award."

" The experience and skills learned while conducting research is a great supplement to in-class learning."

"I really enjoyed the NURS conference at the end to see what others were working on and get to know peers from various backgrounds and majors."

"Overall I felt this was a rewarding and great teaching experience. I learned about the process of acquiring grant money as well as many aspects of research. I would recommend other students to definitely apply. "

" From researching literature to writing the proposal to conducting the research gave me a sense how the scientific process works and a perspective of the entire process."

"I felt the entire experience was very positive and worthwhile. I think Karen did an excellent job of keeping me informed of pertinent information via email, and there didn't seem to be any extraneous or irrelevant paperwork for the students."

"I learned a lot about composing a good proposal during the process. This is a skill that I will use often. I liked doing the actual research the best, of course. It gave greater meaning to the classroom knowledge and a greater connection to the real world."

"I have become an independent thinker as a result of the research I have done over the past year and a half working in lab. I can apply my knowledge to different types of research and different fields. I learned even more when I was composing the paper for the conference and also the PowerPoint presentation because it challenged me to put what I know into words, which is often quite difficult - but it promotes mastery of the topic, which is wonderful. The conference was great - thank you for taking such good care of us. I want to thank you for your support of my research and other undergraduates' research. What you have given is truly a gift and I can't thank you enough. Thank you for all your hard work in getting the fudging to support our various projects."

"I enjoyed traveling to various areas ( California , Tucson , Boston ) to conduct the interviews for my research, and felt inspired by the material that I had gathered for the articles that I would be writing for an academic journal."

"The application process demanded a degree of attentive thought and careful planning I had not anticipated, making the Award that much more gratifying to receive."

"It was a great honor to receive Undergraduate Research Award. I worked hard to get the lessons out of it. Through this project, I was able to learn to conduct research by myself for the first time."

"Without this award I would not have been able to fly to LA to present at the huge national conference that I presented at."

" I enjoyed the formal presentation of my research at the NURS in Las Vegas as this forced me to present in a manner which could be understood by the diverse crowd."

"I would most definitely recommend other students for the award due to the positive experiences I had, and I have already recommended it to some friends. An enormous thanks should go to whoever started the program and whoever grants the funding."

"Greetings from the Nietzsche House in Switzerland !  I wouldn't be here without [the Honors Undergraduate research grant] so I thought I would write to say thank you!  I've made wonderful progress in the library here and am about to start the composition of my thesis!  Thanks again!"

"I am in my final week of travel in Australia and wanted to take a moment to thank you for allowing me to be here. The research grant has made it possible to take this trip, and I believe my thesis will benefit immeasurably."

" [Undergraduate research] was tougher than I expected but overall [was] very rewarding. The symposium was an excellent exercise."

"Overall, it was a great experience. Writing the proposal was very informative and the presentation was exciting as well. [It] has prepared me well for graduate school."

"The [Undergraduate Research Office] does a very good job with funding, helping and preparing students interested in research. I am very thankful for the opportunity."

"URA is a great opportunity to learn about research and to work with interesting and fun project. The research is a great entrance to the graduate program."

"As a huge encouragement, undergraduate research award provided me a great experience and enthusiasm toward my research. Since I was in the biochemistry major, one year of research was able to fulfill the class requirement with the award. Therefore, I would recommend more biochemistry students to apply for this scholarship. Through my research, I know that here at UNR there are students, including graduate students, working so hard and waiting to get the 'result' everyday. There is a great potential that the latest finding by one of the researches at UNR will be presented to the world."

"[My faculty mentor] is one of the smartest and strongest people who can advise and care [for] his students and other faculties. I appreciate the chance to be here."

"This experience was an integral part of my decision to attend grad school. It was inspiring, and gave me a clear look of how to conduct research and present my findings. I strongly advocate these programs for undergrads."

"Has aided me in pursuing advanced degrees - I enjoyed the hands-on experience - I would recommend it."

"I enjoyed the research and especially presentation of results at a conference."

"It was an honor to receive this award. I enjoyed taking and preprocessing data since my project involved taking video images. I think this award should be advertised more so more undergrads become interested in research."

"Definitely will encourage other undergrads to apply for this award - research is a great opportunity that is not available everywhere - it really makes you feel different and above other students or professionals working in the industry - so take this opportunity to innovate with help of a professor/researcher."

"Definitely a worthwhile endeavor (for any undergrad). I liked the opportunity to learn what research and "graduate" school research is like and also I worked with great professors and grad students."

"This is an extremely helpful program. It afforded me an opportunity I would not have had otherwise. I would strongly encourage others to apply for these grants and use them to advance in their specific fields."

"Faculty support was excellent. The program could benefit by granting more funds to students. Overall, a very good learning experience - definitely worth it, and worth improving."

"I was excited and honored to receive the Undergraduate Research Award. Applying for the award was actually an easier process than I had expected."

"I enjoyed learning more about the chemical and physical make up of membranes used in water and waste water treatment. It was also gratifying to see the project that was "mine" and to be able to see the project from the beginning to end. "
