Ryan Abeloe This project will explain the process and ramifications of balkanization in Southeastern Europe . It will delineate the history of the region and demonstrate how the Balkans has become fragmented via physical and human geography factors. Land formations, language, religion, ethnicity, and culture will be analyzed to acutely exemplify how these facets of geography have shaped Southeastern Europe . The historical regional discourse will include visual representations and contextual information on topographical features and changes in control and governance of the Balkans while a contemporary study will illustrate the consequences to the modern region.
Terrorism is a gift to the media in the age of "if it bleeds, it leads." and terrorists also use the media to their advantage. The media is involved in spreading terrorism, but does zt also intluence governmental response to terrorjsm? 'I'his 1s what I intend to answer with this project. In the introduction and objectives sections of this proposal I will set out the specific study and purpose of this prqject. Subsequently, in the plans for research, timetable, plans for dissemination of results, and qualifications of the student sections i t will be illustrated how 1 will accomplish this study.
Developing countries with fixed exchange rate regimes are contrasted with developing countries that have monetary autonomy, or control over their own monetary policy and currency creation, to determine optimal economic structures, and the appropriate policies within those structures. An array of issues dealing with credibility and risk are addressed for both regimes, and both the benefits and weaknesses of each are analyzed. Basic and advanced international macroeconomic aggregate models are used to determine correct policy within the different regimes. There is considerable focus on seignorage, the amount of debt currency holders are willing to carry (thus the viability of floating exchange rate regimes) as a logical means to increase growth and expedite international debt repayment within a floating exchange rate regime. Levels of cent ral bank dependency are also contrasted. To clarify policy suggestion, a viable seignorage model
Due to the new reporting requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, many public companies have recently disclosed significant internal control system weaknesses. These failures incluede: lack of compliance with general accepted accounting procedures, lack of employee training and education and indadequate systems documentaion. What ar ethe causes of these problems? In general, they result from amanagement's manipulation and insufficient understanding of their internal control systems. How has management been able to override these controls? What have been the consequences to these violations? This study explores the affect management infringements have had on companies' internal control systems. I plan on analyzing annual reports that have declared a mamterial weakness, categorize them based on the various management infringements disclosed and interview experts in corporate and accounting professions to support my these questions.
This project will analyze the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 to determine the parts of the Act that may result in litigation for publicly traded companies and their auditors.. Since this is a new law, there is no precedent case law to help companies interpret and comply with the requirements. I will research this topic and make an argument, based on historical litigations arising from similar acts governing accounting, for the areas of the law that I determine are questionable and might cause a company to end up in the litigation process. I will use a sample of companies to analyze where the financial efforts are being focused in compliance with this
This project will study the effects of combined PS341 and anti-CD40 antibody (SGN 40) treatment on human Burkitt’s lymphoma cells. Individually, these drugs act to decrease the malignancy and augmentation of lymphoma cells in humans. I hypothesize that combined bortezomib and SGN40 treatment will have an additive anti-tumor effect on human Burkitt lymphoma cells. To test this hypothesis, I will determine the direct effects of combined bortezomib and SGN40 treatment on the rate of tumor cell survival and proliferation in vitro and in vivo.
Over the last 300 years, the portrayal of London in British Literature has shifted, and the city which was on= represented as tbc: site of learning and opportunity is now depicted as an immoral and chaotic space which corrupts its inhabitants. This shift is paraHe1e.d by a literary shift: the rise of the novel. I will argue the novel itself changes its shape along with the city it represents. I wiH investigate the decline in London's moral reputation by tracing its represmtahn in the British novel, using four key texts: Fielding's Tom Jones, Dickens's Oliver Twist, Woolf's M s - Dallowq, and Monica Ali's Brick Lane.
My thesis, Tracking Travel Writing, will attempt to track the changes in the type of travel writing published in the United States since the onset of airplane travel approximately 65 years ago. Using the New York Times as my research data, I will choose articles from this publication’s travel section for review. I will try to determine the tone of each article, the area of travel discussed, the focus of the writer, and the inferred intent or reason for writing the piece.
The reactivation from latency of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) requires the viral protein ORF50, which regulates the expression of various viral genes, resulting in the development of Kaposi’s sarcoma. Previous studies have shown that ORF50 interacts with another viral protein called K8. The function of K8 has not is not clear, but it has been shown to be essential for viral lytic replication. Recent studies have determined that by binding to ORF50, K8 modulates its transactivational ability. The proposed study aims to elucidate the ORF50-K8 interaction. This will be done by mapping the domain(s) of the two proteins involved in the interaction. The results of this research will help elucidate the mechanisms by which HHV8 lytic replication is modulated, and may reveal potential targets for drugs and treatment of HHV8-mediated conditions.
