UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM
NSF EPSCoR
Summer 2008
Deadline 3/3/08
The Nevada System of Higher Education announces a program to promote undergraduate research. Eligible students must be undergraduates either majoring in mathematics, science, or engineering, or majoring in education and specializing in teaching K-12 in the fields of mathematics, science, or technology. Students must be enrolled at one of the NSHE institutions: UNLV, UNR , NSC , CSN, GBC , TMCC, WNC, or the Sierra Nevada College . Research will be conducted under the guidance of a faculty research mentor at the University of Nevada , Reno (UNR), the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), or the Desert Research Institute (DRI). The program is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation's Experimental Program for the Stimulation of Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR) .
Approximately 20 Summer Research scholarships will be awarded to successful applicants who will spend the summer doing research. As part of the application process, students are required to identify and discuss research with a faculty mentor with whom they would be conducting research.
If you have questions about the appropriateness of your preferred research agenda, check with your proposed mentor or advisor. Summer research opportunities often lead to longer-term collaborations between students and faculty. Students receiving NSF EPSCoR Summer Fellowships often perform publishable research and pursue careers in exciting fields of research. A list of faculty members who have volunteered as mentors is available at http://www.nevada.edu/epscor/mentor.html . However, you are not limited to mentors on this list. Students may access the research institution's departmental websites for faculty engaged in an area of research normally funded by NSF. Students will be selected in a statewide merit-based review.
Program Compensation:
* This program provides student recipients with a scholarship of $4,500.
* Each mentor will receive $1000 which must be spent to support this research project.
* Tuition remission for 3 summer research course credits will be included. The program's Campus Coordinator will provide participating students a list of appropriate course numbers related to their research efforts. The tuition remission is provided to qualify/verify that each student is currently enrolled and eligible to receive this scholarship, as well as to provide each student academic credit for the summer research experience. Please note these summer course credits will be limited to a discipline(s) related and incorporated into the research project.
Because all recipients will be immersed in time-intensive research, participants are not allowed to have other course work or employment.
Potential applicants with questions regarding this program are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Leaders Dr. Saiid Saiidi at UNR (ugresearch@unr.edu) or Dr. John Farley at UNLV (farley@unlv.nevada.edu).
