It is a very big decision to teach overseas. Before acting, you should consider every single negative and positive aspect of the country which is the target. Lets say you have just decided to go and teach in Turkey. But, you have no idea how to begin, how to get the visa, where to find a job, what to take with you. You cannot speak even one word in Turkish and you cannot list even five Turkish names. One great thing is there to help you. No, it is not the holy book but the internet. Thanks to the internet, anyone can gain information about everything related to teaching in Turkey.

The best way to start is to get familiar with the teaching conditions. It is good to know the education system of a country if you will be teaching there. The structure of Turkish education system can be best learned from the official site of Ministry of Education. However this web site does not provide enough information about the state of English learning and teaching in the country. At this point, I would strongly recommend Guray Caglars article which explores the issue in details in another website.

Now that you are knowledgeable enough about the education system and the status of English in Turkey, your next step is to learn about the living conditions there. Brian OFlynn, who taught English in Turkey for six years, provides invaluable information about the Turkish students, the workplace, weather, food & drink and cost of living in Turkey. You even learn how much a loaf of bread costs. In a very similar web site, you can read the notes and comments on living and teaching in Turkey through information submitted by teachers working there.

If all this information is not enough and you still have questions, I would recommend you to visit Adam Simpsons website that gives information about EFL in Turkey. The qualifications to teach English in Turkey, getting a visa, living conditions, where to find a job, cost of living, and Turkish students are some of the topics Simpson talks about. He also provides answers to FAQ about teaching English in Turkey, which makes this site different than the other ones.

Among all the options mentioned on these pages, the best option for an American might be Fulbright. Unfortunately, those web sites do not explain how to apply for Fulbright, what it offers, etc. The best way to learn about it is to visit Fulbright Online. However, you really need more specific information to learn about the health care and insurance in Turkey. None of the sites that I have mentioned so far explains the health insurance, perhaps due to its complexity in Turkey. But, do NOT worry. All About Turkey provides information about the health care in Turkey.. Actually, the most difficult thing to explain is not health care but the Turkish food. Due to its richness, it is not possible to talk about Turkish food in a few sentences. Nevertheless, Focus Multimedia is only about the Turkish food and provides comprehensive information.

Now, you are an expert about the teaching and living conditions in Turkey. It is time to find a job. Start learning about requirements, typical contracts, peak hiring seasons, teaching hours, monthly salary, income tax, cost of living, accommodations, health care, holidays and visa. The Oxford Seminars is a perfect site that provides information all about these. However, the information about getting visa is not explained thoroughly in this site. Therefore, I suggest the official web site of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You both learn what type of visa you need and how to get it online.

Now it is time to reserve your flight ticket and start dreaming your unforgettable and unique days in Turkey. Good luck!
