The Educational System in Hong Kong
The education system in Hong Kong currently follows the British system, with six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school, two years of senior secondary school. There is a two-year course leading to the advanced level examinations, which provide for entry into tertiary institutions offering diploma, higher diploma, two-year associate’s degree and three-year bachelor’s degree programs.
Teaching Jobs in Hong Kong
Speaking English is a major priority for the people of Hong Kong. The business world is always moving quickly, and global communication is vitally important.
In order to compete effectively, Hong Kong emphasizes English education for everyone from childhood on up.
In Hong Kong, you can make pretty good cash. You can easily make $30,000 a year at a full-time, entry level teaching job. Hong Kong offers an abundance of part-time teaching opportunities that pay higher hourly wages ($20-$30) than you would get teaching English in most other countries.
Furthermore, unlike Japan, the cost of living is not so high that you end up spending it all to pay your bills. Hong Kong is also an excellent location. If you live and teach in Hong Kong, you can easily get to other great sightseeing places in Asia, like Thailand, China and Japan. Plus, your salary in Hong Kong will be high enough that you can spend your vacation time hopping around the various countries of Asia.
Most teachers end up working either at international schools a government position or a commercial English school. The international schools are the best in terms of pay and workload. You also get great benefits. But as you might expect, the competition is pretty stiff for these jobs. The government jobs also have good benefits, but the pay is not as good. Finally, the commercial English schools are pretty much the bottom of the heap, although they treat you much better than commercial English schools in countries such as Japan or Korea.
Hong Kong Visas
In Hong Kong, employers are stricter about passport and visa issues. This is a good thing because it means that you won’t get scammed or screwed around. U.S. Citizens visiting Hong Kong for not more than three months/90 days are not required to obtain visas. However, Americans need to be invited by companies or schools for work visa and must pay USD18.00 processing fee and other necessary fees. All others must have a visa in hand. Getting a visa to teach in Hong Kong may be a bit of a struggle, because there is a great deal of paperwork involved, so you'll want to start early.
Food in Hong Kong
There's no better place in the world to sample regional Chinese cuisine than Hong Kong, where you can eat everything from the ubiquitous Cantonese food to Sichuan, Shanghainese, Hunanese, Beijing, Chiu Chow, and Pekingese dishes.
Enjoy Chinese or Western cuisine at one of Hong Kong's many restaurants that offer spectacular views of either Kowloon (with its glowing neon lights) or Hong Kong Island (with its skyscrapers and Victoria Peak).
Nothing conveys a sense of Chinese life more vividly than a visit to a crowded, lively Cantonese restaurant for breakfast or lunch, when you can feast on spring rolls, steamed dumplings, and other goodies served in bamboo steamers.
The British rulers may be gone, but their legacy lives on in the afternoon tea. Virtually all upper-class hotels offer it. Come for afternoon tea, nibble on finger sandwiches, and gaze away.
Housing:
One of the main drawbacks when you choose to teach English in Hong Kong is the fact that it may be difficult to find affordable housing. In many countries, the school that hires you will supply you with free teacher's housing; however, in Hong Kong this is not necessarily the case. However, most teaching jobs in Hong Kong do include a "housing allowance" along with your regular paycheck, which is designed to help cover rent.
Transport:Getting around Hong Kong is not very hard at all. Driving is not recommended due to the crowd and few parking spots. The public transportation is very convenient. With a map in hand, you can figure out how to get around pretty easily.
