Veteran Education Benefits

Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB-AD) - Chapter 30
The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty.

Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) - Chapter 1606
The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.

Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) - Chapter 35
DEA provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits.

Post-Vietnam Era Veterans' Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) - Chapter 32
VEAP is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Vocational Rehabilitation - Chapter 31
Any veteran with a compensable disability rating of 10% or more is invited to file application for Vocational Rehabilitation by completing VA Form 28-1900 and submitting it to your local VA Office, 1201 Terminal Way, Reno, Nevada 89520. Once the application is filed, an appointment will be scheduled for you to discuss your educational plans, test your aptitude, interests and abilities as well as review the nature of your disability and how it affects your ability to gain employment. A decision of your entitlement to the benefit will be rendered after the counseling appointment.

WAVE (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment)
All students who are receiving either the Montgomery GI BILL Active duty or Selected Reserve MUST now verify their enrollments monthly to receive payments. This verification can be done on the last day of the month either by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) application on this web site or by using an automated telephone system (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378 and follow the prompts.

Work-Study Program
This program is available to any student receiving VA education benefits who is attending school three-quarter time or more. An individual working under this program may work at the school veterans' office, VA Regional Office, VA Medical Facilities, or at approved State employment offices. Work-study students are paid at either the state or Federal minimum wage, which ever is greater. Tuition Assistance "Top Up" (TATU)
Program and eligibility information concerning an amendment to the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty education program that permits VA to pay a Tuition Assistance Top- Up benefit. The amount of the benefit can be equal to the difference between the total cost of a college course and the amount of Tuition Assistance that is paid by the military for the course.

Tutorial Assistance Program
Tutorial assistance is available if you are receiving VA educational assistance at the half-time or more rate and have a deficiency in a subject making tutoring necessary. If you have questions on this program please contact the Veterans Administration directly at their toll-free number 1-888-442-4551.

Tuition Payment Deferment
You may be eligible to apply for the Veteran Tuition Deferment if you are enrolled in at least 7 credits at the university. This allows you to make three equal payments to the cashier over the course of the semester. To apply you must pick up an application from the Veteran's Services office. Veteran deferment forms are available to pick up in our office during the months of August (for fall payment deferment) and January (for spring payment deferment). The deferment option is not available for summer.

University of Nevada, Reno Veteran's Course Submission
All educational benefits recipients must submit your course listings EVERY semester to receive your benefits. Simply copy and paste your ePAWS class schedule into the text along with your name and "R" number and e-mail it to us as soon as you register for classes. DO NOT include your Social Security Number in any e-mail sent to our office. Or submit a University Veteran's Course Submission Form available in our office.
