What is Upward Bound?
Upward Bound is a FREE college preparatory program for students who come from a family where no parent in the home has earned a four-year college degree and/or the family taxable income meets the low income level guidelines set by the federal government. The University of Nevada has sponsored federally funded Upward Bound programs since 1966. Currently three U.S. Department of Education TRIO grants fund college preparation activities for 175 high school students in Washoe, Douglas, and Lyon counties in Northern Nevada.
The Goal
The goal of the program is to provide the necessary individualized counseling, guidance, tutoring, resources, experiences, and academic support to ensure graduation from high school and successful entrance and graduation from college.
The program provides many opportunities for a high school student to develop academic and testing skills, receive assistance with career planning, develop self-esteem, and be exposed to academic, social, and cultural resources that promote success in college. The program requires commitment from the students and their families throughout their high school years.
