Degree Audit Reporting System at the University of Nevada, Reno
DARS FAQs
- What is DARS?
- DARS is an automated record of your registration, transfer credits and academic
history at the University of Nevada, Reno. This information is drawn from the Student
Information System (SIS). DARS is automatically updated as you make academic progress
towards your degree. DARS indicates both the graduation requirements that have been
completed and those that remain to be satisfied. You and your adviser will use this
report to help plan your next semester's work and for long-range planning as well.

- Why is DARS at the University of Nevada?
- DARS will give you access to more accurate, more useful information about your
progress toward your degree and more flexibility in exploring your academic options.
For example, if you are contemplating changing your major, a "What-if" DARS will be
able to show you automatically how your completed course work applies to your new major
and which completed courses would or would not count toward your new program.

- How will I obtain information from DARS?
- DARS is available for all matriculated students enrolled in Nevada undergraduate
programs. A Web version of your DARS report is available to view or print through ePAWS.
This version is updated weekly. See the Get a DARS page for the update schedule.

- Do I still need to see an advisor?
- Yes! The academic advisor will use the DARS report in the advisement process.
An advisor can answer questions you may have and advise you about course substitutions
and waivers that may be needed. Many programs include requirements for which courses
must be approved by an advisor or a department before they can be included on the
report.

- What is a "What-if" DARS?
- This special DARS is an audit that answers the question "What-if" I declare an
additional major or change my major. It will apply your completed and current course
work and show you how your requirements for graduation will change. You may obtain a
"What-if" DARS at the Admissions and Records Office on the second floor of the Student
Services Building, or from an academic advisor who has access to DARSweb.

- How can DARS help me explore other majors and show me how a change might affect my course work?
- First, obtain a "What if" DARS for the major(s) you are considering at the
Admissions and Records Office. A "What if" DARS automatically shows what and how
completed course work will apply to a new major. Make an appointment to visit with an
advisor in the Advising Center, to discuss your "what-if" DARS and the procedure
for changing majors. Some academic advisors have access to DARSweb, and can run a "what-if" DARS for you themselves. Check with your advisor before meeting with him/her.

- Some of my transfer credits are not showing up on my DARS. What should I do?
- First, make sure that your transcript has been sent from your previous school.
Your transcripts will be evaluated and transfer credit awarded for Core Curriculum
course work. However, it may be possible for you to use more of your transfer
work to meet Core Curriculum Requirements. Print a Core Curriculum substitution
form and make an appointment to meet with an advisor in the
Transfer Center. If there is a "preliminary" note on your DARS report, indicating that some of the coursework is still being reviewed, please wait until the evaluation is final, and the "preliminary" note has been removed, before starting the substitution request process.
- An advisor in your department will determine whether transfer work can be used to
satisfy major requirements. Print a
DARS Exception/ Correction form and make an appointment to meet with an advisor in your
program. Your advisor will be responsible for submitting the completed DARS
Exception/Correction form to the DARS staff in the Admissions and Records Office.

- What should I do if there is an error on my DARS report?
- If your advisor has submitted a DARS Exception/Correction form on your
behalf, please give the DARS office 3 weeks for processing. If the change
is not reflected on your DARS report after 3 weeks, contact your advisor to
verify that the change form was submitted promptly.
- The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is in the
midst of a common course numbering effort. As a result the departmental prefixes
and/or numbers of some University of Nevada, Reno courses will be changed to
match the coursework offered at other NSHE institutions. While these changes
are in progress, you may see errors on your DARS report. Coursework that once
filled a requirement may temporarily move to the elective requirement. If this
happens on your report, please check to see if the course in question is listed
in the "Course Number Changes" table with a "Y" in the CCN-column. If so, the course is part of
the common course numbering project and the error will be corrected by the DARS
staff as their work progresses through the common course numbering changes.
No action is required of you or your advisor to correct this problem. The error
will disappear when your report is updated the following week.

- When will my new major appear on my DARS?
- Once your change of major form is processed, your DARS report will automatically
show the new major when the web is updated. The web version of DARS is updated weekly. See the "Get a DARS" page for the update schedule.

- I have two majors can I access DARS for both through ePAWS?
- If both majors are in the same college, in most cases you will be able to access both reports
through ePAWS; they will display one after the other in a single pdf file. If your majors are in different colleges, and those colleges update on different nights, both reports will update - but only one report will
be available online at a time. Look for each report after 10am on the day after the overnight update for its associated college. If your majors are in different colleges that update on the same night, the results can vary. You'll find both reports, or either report... and which you find can change from week to week. You can always obtain a DARS for either major (or both majors) at the Admissions
and Records Office on the second floor of the Student Services Building, or from an advisor who has access to DARSweb. See the "Get a DARS" page for the update schedule.
