Video and Podcast Resources: First-Generation and Low-Income Students in Higher Education
In an effort to increase awareness regarding the issues facing first-generation and low-income college students, the Center for Student Cultural Diversity is interviewing various faculty members and current students for a series of web-based vignettes and podcasts titled “First-Generation College Students in Higher Education.” Students originating from families where neither parent has completed a Bachelor’s degree are considered to be first-generation. With nearly 40% of the University of Nevada, Reno student body identified as first-generation, understanding the unique issues facing this population is of critical importance to the success of our institution. According to national studies, common challenges faced by many in this population include low-income households, lack family support in regard to the pursuit of postsecondary education and increased likelihood to leave college prior to graduation. (Horn and Nunez, 2000).
The video vignettes will be available for viewing and dowload in April, as part of The Center's Annual Intercultural Month programming.
