The council is comprised of Tribes, Tribal Education Directors, Washoe County School District Title VII Indian Educators, and the Nevada Department of Education. The committee was created by Sherry Rupert, Director of the Nevada Indian Commission. The purpose of the committee is to create a communication network between all professionals who have a goal of providing the best education for Native American youth. Such areas of accomplishments made by the committee are: The Indian Education Summit (March 25-26), Strategic Plan for the WCSD , and eliminating communication barriers between partners and educators.
The alumni chapter is comprised of Native American Alumni, friends & family of the Chapter, and interested faculty. The purpose of the chapter is to promote the Native American community into the life of the University. It supports Native American Students by providing scholarships and support while they are attending University.
The collaborative is comprised of Northern Nevada Higher Education institutions. Such collaborators are: TMCC, WNC, GBCC, etc. The purpose of the collaborative is to promote communication and recruitment of Native American Students into higher education.
Northern Nevada Hispanic Youth Soccer League Teams are brought on to campus by Kappa Delta Chi. The students from the soccer league team and their family members come to UNR for a day to open up the Season they have a B-Q and get to meet students and staff from the University. The Center has a “Center Table” with information on the Center and UNR admittance requirements. I have also been a speaker for them.
Revise, review applications, and make recommendations as to who would be a good candidate for the scholarships. Hispanic Youth Image Work with the Coordinator to assist students with the UNR application process, financial aid application, academic advising, and sometimes providing or speaking to parents about the university system.
The committee meets once a month to pursue the well being of the Latino community and to provide educational opportunities for the community in general.
The committee gets students from the Washoe County High School, TMCC and UNR who are graduating and their families for recognition and celebration. The event is alternated
Adelante Awards Committee: An event for the Hispanic/Latino community where t Nevada Hispanic Services Scholarship recipients are announced.
Establishes a network of faculty, staff and student allies who will provide support and advocacy by identifying the issues and concerns attached to sexual orientation in the university community. Goals- Ensure that sexual orientation is not a barrier to full participation in the academic, social and cultural life of the university for any member of the community-Identify issues and concerns, and recommend policies, projects, programs, strategies, and initiatives, that can resolve them- Provide educational materials and opportunities to the university community.
Identify and communicate the issues and concerns of women faculty, staff, and students regarding their experiences in, and expectations of, the university. Goals- Ensure that the issues and concerns of women are communicated appropriately -Provide opportunities for networking and the development of support systems for women -Ensure that gender is not a barrier to full participation by women in the academic, professional, social and cultural life of the university .
The group is a network of many community groups that are trying to stop/slowdown STD/HIV the community groups include: Northern Nevada HOPES Nevada Hispanic Services Washoe County District Health Department Nevada State Health Division Carson City Health Department A Rainbow Place Nevada AIDS Foundation Silver Dollar Court Latino Pride Reno/Sparks Indian Colony. They are all groups that work with people of the LGBT community and various minority communities, many do things non-health related.
The overall goal of the NAACP National Education Department is to ensure that all students have access to an equal and high-quality public education by eliminating all education related racial and ethnic disparities. Through advocacy training, policy development and guidance, building collaborative networks, and direct action, the National Education Department works to accomplish this goal with assistance from NAACP regional directors, state and local education committee chairs as well as our Partners in Education.
Enhance communication among the diversity committees and provide guidance to the university on a broad range of issues and concerns by identifying potential initiatives, projects, and programs that will improve intercultural relations at the university.
The Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to economically empowering and sustaining the African American business community in Nevada through entrepreneurship and capitalistic activities within the state and with other states via increased interaction with the Black Diaspora
