The
Colin Higgins Courage Awards and Grants
Grants individuals who are either a) LGBTQ or questioning youth who
have "bravely stood up to hostility and intolerance" based on their
sexual orientation and triumphed over bigotry; b) LGBTQ adults who have made
strong impact in the lives of LGBTQQ youth or the overall LGBTQ movement; or c)
allies of any age working to end homophobia and discrimination. The Foundation
has also established two scholarship programs in memory of Colin Higgins at The
Stanford University Department of English, and The UCLA School of Theater, Film
and Television. These scholarships support graduate students and filmmakers
whose work enlightens and enriches the human spirit. The universities, and not
the Colin Higgins Foundation, administer these scholarship programs.

The
Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund
Need-based grants to student activists who are able to do academic
work at the college level and are involved in building the movement for social
and economic justice. US citizenship is not a requirement but there is a strong
preference for grantees who are building the progressive movement in the United
States. Up to $6,000.
Deaf Queer
Youth Scholarship
The Deaf Queer
Resource Center sponsors a $500 scholarship for deaf lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer students who are out about their
sexual orientation/identity. Candidates must be currently enrolled in high
school or college, be under the age of 25, and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. US
Citizenship is required. Deaf Queer youth of color are especially encouraged to
apply. Selection is based on a written or video essay.

Fund for
Lesbian and Gay Scholarships (FLAGS)
The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to gay, lesbian and
bisexual students who are involved in the community. For more information or an

LEAGUE
Foundation
The LEAGUE Foundation awards scholarships for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender high school seniors who have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
and who are actively and substantially involved in community service.
Scholarships include the Matthew Shepard Memorial Scholarship (name used with
permission of the Shepard family), named for the Wyoming college student
murdered in 1998 for his sexual orientation, and the Laurel Hester Memorial
Scholarship.

Lee Dublin Scholarship Fund
The Lee Dubin Scholarship is sponsored by COLAGE (Children of Lesbians
and Gays Everywhere) and the Family Pride Coalition (FPC). Three to five $1,000
scholarships are awarded to children of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered
parents and guardians who have worked to affect change in the LGBT community
and the community at large.

LGBT HEART
Scholarship Fund
The LGBT HEART Scholarship Fund for the Health Professions seeks to promote
the health and well-being of the LGBT community through the support of
scholarship and research. Single-year scholarships are available on an annual
basis to “out” LGBT students pursuing advanced (Masters level or higher)
degrees in the health professions. Award recipients, known as HEART Scholars,
are selected based on a combination of need and merit-based factors.
Eligibility criteria for the LGBT HEART Scholarship Fund for the Health
Professions are as follows:
-Enrollment in a graduate level program in the health
professions
-Enrollment at an accredited college, university or
school in the United States
-Be “out” as a member of the LGBT community
-Eligible to receive financial aid and in good academic
standing
-Demonstrate a commitment or contribution to the health of the LGBT community.

Malyon-Smith Scholarship Award
The American Psychological Association's Division 44 (Society for the
Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues) offers this award to support
graduate student research into psychological issues relevant to gay, lesbian
and bisexual individuals, groups or communities. The scholarship amount is up

Messenger-Anderson
Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program
The Messenger-Anderson Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program offers
several $10,000 scholarships ($5,000 for the first year and $2,500 for the
second and third years) to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students
pursuing a degree in journalism and communications at an accredited four-year
college or university. High school seniors and current undergraduate students
are eligible to apply. A GPA of 2.8 or better is required. The award is sponsored
by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). Winners are required to
participate in the Messenger-Anderson Scholarship Intern Program at NGLTF
offices in Washington, DC, or New York City during the summer.

National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association
(NLGA)
NLGJA provides several scholarships and awards for LGBT students
interested in journalism. These include the $5,000 Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship (deadline
early February), the $1,000 Bob Ross Student Scholarship from the
NLGJA Northern California Chapter (deadline mid-July), and the $500 and $1,000 Excellence in Journalism Awards.

NGPA-Education
Fund Scholarships for Aviation Students
The National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) Education Fund provides scholarships
to members of the gay and lesbian community (including straight allies) who are
pursuing an aviation career as a professional pilot. Applicants must be
accepted at or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with
an aviation related curriculum (e.g., aerospace, aerodynamics, engineering,
airport management) in pursuit of a degree leading to a career as a
professional pilot or accepted to or undergoing a course of study in a
recognized professional pilot aviation training program in an institution of
higher learning, aviation technical school, or government approved flight
school. Scholarship funds cannot be used to pay for the basic Private Pilot
Certificate; they must be applied towards advanced fight training at a
government certified flight school or to college tuition if enrolled in an
accredited aviation degree program. More than $60,000 has been awarded in
scholarships; in 2007, NGPA-EF intends to award at least three scholarships
totaling $9,000. The application deadline is March 1.

NWSA Graduate Scholarships in Lesbian Studies
This award provides financial assistance to graduate students doing
Master's thesis or Ph.D. dissertation research in lesbian studies. Students do
not need to be enrolled in a women's studies program. Preference is given to
candidates who are National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) members.

The PFLAG National GLBT Scholarship Program was established by Parents,
Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in 2003 to help support the
education of GLBT youth and allies. It includes eleven award programs. The
scholarship program was funded by the estate of Palmer B. Carson. The $2,500
scholarships include:

Point Foundation
The Point Foundation is a national, publicly supported scholarship fund that
provides financial support, mentoring and hope to meritorious undergraduate,
graduate, and post-graduate students who are marginalized because of their
sexual orientation or gender identity. Awards amounts vary based on need, and
are renewed annually until the completion of one's degree as long as key
expectations are met in the "Contract of Excellence" signed by each
Scholar, which includes a requirement to maintain a 3.5 GPA.

PRINCETON
UNIVERSITY SOCIETY OF FELLOWS IN THE LIBERAL ARTS Three-year LGBT Postdoctoral
Fellowship
For recent Ph.D’s in humanities and selected
social sciences.
The LGBT Alumni Association of Princeton
University, and the Society of Fellows are co-sponsors of this three-year
postdoctoral fellowship to be awarded to a scholar working on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender issues in any of the disciplines represented in the Society, and
particularly in new and emerging fields. The postdoctoral fellow will be
expected to pursue research in any scholarly areas that will make a positive
contribution toward public discourse around contemporary LGBT issues. The
successful candidate is required to teach one course each semester for the
first two years and normally does some advising in his/her specialty. In the
third year, the fellow teaches only one course and devotes the final semester
to full-time research. The LGBT fellow is also encouraged to share research
interests with the wider campus community, with the aim of creating a sustained
dialogue on issues related to LGBT equality.

Queer Scholars Program
The Queer Foundation Effective Writing and Scholarships Program
provides nationwide, $1,000 college scholarships to outstanding LGBTQA high
school students, winners of an annual essay contest to promote queer studies to
improve the educational situation of queer youth. Collected, the essays form
queer-the-curriculum materials for use in high schools to benefit all LGBTQA
students.
Competing in the essay contest gives academically talented LGBTQA
students another means and reason to be out and proud members of their
communities—small or large—and to recognize that sexual minority status is seen
as a plus.

Ronald P.
Wilmot Scholarship
The Ronald P. Wilmot Scholarship Fund of the Jewish Community
Federation Endowment Fund provides up to three scholarships annually to
children of gay and/or lesbian parent(s) toward undergraduate, postgraduate, or
comparable degrees at accredited institutions of higher education. Eligibility
is based on the applicants’ exceptional academic and/or artistic excellence and
financial need.

Scrivner Research Grants
The American Psychological Foundation (APF) sponsors the Roy Scrivner Research
Grants for graduate and postdoctoral research concerning the study of lesbian,
gay and bisexual family psychology and family therapy. There are two graduate
student grants of up to $1,000 each and one postdoctoral grant of up to
$10,000.

Skadden
Foundation Fellowship
The Skadden Fellowship Foundation, described as "a legal Peace
Corps" by The Los Angeles Times, was established in 1988 to
commemorate the firm's 40th anniversary, in recognition of the dire need for
greater funding for graduating law students who wish to devote their
professional lives to providing legal services to the poor (including the working
poor), the elderly, the homeless and the disabled, as well as those deprived of
their civil or human rights. The aim of the foundation is to give
Fellows the freedom to pursue public interest work; thus, the Fellows create
their own projects at public interest organizations with at least two lawyers
on staff before they apply.

SOLGA Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize Competition
The American Anthropological Association - Society of Lesbian and Gay
Anthropologists (SOLGA) offers this award for a scholarly anthropological
paper, written by a student, on a gay or lesbian topic. The prize consists of a
cash award and a letter of commendation from the Prize Committee. (The prize is
not specifically for tuition, but rather is intended to reward excellent
graduate student papers.)

The Tang
Scholarship Fund
History
Edward Cheng Ming Tang established this award in 2007 to provide
financial assistance to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Asian and
Pacific Islanders for post-secondary education.
This scholarship is to help LGBT youth proudly achieving educational pursuits
and dreams without shame. This
scholarship is renewable for a maximum of three years (a total of four years)
if the student annually meets the renewal requirements.
Eligibility:
* Self-identified as Asian/Pacific Islander; (at least 25% API ancestry);
(priority will be given to those self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or
transgender, and involved in the LGBT community);
* Graduate from a high school in one of the nine Bay Area counties;
Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara County,
Napa, Sonoma or Solano
* Acceptance to or awaiting acceptance to a four-year accredited

Zami: Audre Lorde Scholarship
Zami offers the Audre Lorde Scholarship and several other $1,000
scholarships to gay and lesbian undergraduate and graduate students of African
descent who are making significant contributions to their communities. Zami is
Atlanta's premiere organization for lesbians of African descent, and the
award's emphasis is on service to the lesbian community.
