APPLYING FAQs

When are students selected?

  • Students are selected in summer for the fall semester
  • Students are selected in late fall and over the winter break for spring semester
  • We are funded to serve 175 students. The number of open spots available depends on how many students graduate, transfer or do not meet our program requirements during their first semester in the TRiO Scholars Program.

What happens to my application?

  • Applications are received on line from our web page
  • www.unr.edu/trio
  • e-mail confirmation of receipt is sent to the e-mail address included on the application. MAKE SURE YOUR e-MAIL AND PHONE NUMBER ARE CORRECT!

How will I know if I am in the program?

  • If you are not eligible for the program, you will receive notification by e-mail
  • If you are eligible and all requested documents have been submitted but there is no room in the program, you will be notified by e-mail that you are on a wait list for an interview.
  • Incomplete applications will be shredded after 4 weeks unless contact has been made with the program to discuss problems obtaining any of the documents.
  • If you are eligible and there is room in the program, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail to come to the office for an interview.
  • If you are selected for the program after the interview, you will be notified by phone and/or e-mail

If I am put on a wait list, will I need to reapply when there is an opening?

  • Your application is good for one year, but you may be requested to update your tax information if a new tax year is in effect at the time you are selected for an interview.  Application information is held in the strictest confidence and maintained in secure, limited access files. After one year, applications are shredded.
  • For 07/08, we would use the 2006 tax information.
  • For the 08/09 academic year, we will be looking at the 2007 taxes

Does anyone get priority for the program?

  • We give first priority to students who have complete applications. Completed applications are then considered based on need for services. You must have all requested information on file in order to be considered including tax information and the eligibility signature form.
  • We request income and eligibility information because this information is required by the U.S. Department of Education, our funding agency.
  • In order to be eligible, you must also have an identified academic need for services
