From the President:
The value of great friends and great faculty
"Like so many other young people, I had little idea of what I wanted to do with my life until I attended the University of Nevada. The university set me on the course I was to follow with my life. It provided a huge difference for me and others like me."— Nevada State Senator William Raggio, a 1948 graduate from the university in political science and 31-year veteran of the Nevada State Senate.
Great friends and great faculty. Great faculty and great friends. With both, we have a chance to build an even greater university.
And a primary measure of a university's friends is the devotion of its alumni and the devotion of those who, although never having attended the university, have come to love it as their own.
Great alumni friends support the university and are in many ways our greatest storytellers. The success stories of our alumni are often a testament to the education and inspiration that many of you received while students on campus.
Other great friends are those who, like my wife and me, have moved to Nevada from another place. All of us have found beauty in the mountains, as well as satisfaction in being part of a vibrant state full of wonderful people who know the possibilities of tomorrow.
You are emblematic of the New West, a place where economic diversification, technological innovation, and the emotional investment of making one's community a better place is strong.
In the following pages, you will read about some of the people who have chosen to give back to their university in meaningful ways. Some have given their time, and others have given their financial resources. Many of you have done both, and I am grateful.
Why is it important to give? The long-term quality of your university depends on it. Our margin of excellence will be through private philanthropy, both large and small.
Our mission — to be a higher education leader in our teaching, research, and service — requires that we not only stay competitive, but that we move ahead with peer institutions all over the New West.
We are a strong university. We are blessed with great friends and great faculty. The university looks forward to your continued support this year.
