Swine Flu Update

To all students:
With the recent outbreak of cases of the Swine Flu, it is important to recognize that the United States is taking precautionary steps to help decrease the spread of this illness. This is not a time to panic, but to realize that awareness is the first step in prevention.  This is a treatable illness.
What is the Swine Flu?
The Swine Flu is a virus that is usually found in pigs, but is currently being spread person to person.
What are the symptoms?
This virus causes typical flu like symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, and respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, or sore throat. Some people develop diarrhea or vomiting.
If you got a Flu shot this year, does this protect you from this virus?
Since this is a new strain of the flu virus, the current vaccine does not protect against the Swine Flu.  Currently there are ongoing efforts to develop a vaccine.
What Can You Do to help decrease the spread of this illness?
Wash your hands frequently
Cover your coughs and sneezes
If you are ill, stay home
Take care of yourself:  eat well, get plenty of sleep
What should you do if you develop symptoms?
Just like with most types of flu, many cases will be mild, and can be treated at home with rest, increased fluid intake, and Tylenol. Do not take aspirin if you have flu like symptoms. If you develop symptoms of fever greater than 101, severe cough or shortness of breath, or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, you should see a physician at the Student Health Center or in the community.

With these simple steps, we as a campus community can do our part to help decrease the spread of this illness.  The physicians and staff at the Student Health Center are here to help you if you have questions or if you develop symptoms.  Additional information can be found at www.cdc.gov/swineflu

If you have any questions please contact the Student Health Center at 784-6598.
