Sharing Knowledge Through Service

Registration for this program is now closed for the Spring term. Please view our Engagement Opportunities page to view other opportunities through the Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (OSLCE).

Sharing Knowledge Through Service

Sharing Knowledge Through Service is a spring semester program coordinated by the Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (OSLCE), from Jan 26th to May 2nd. Through this program, students commit two hours of service a week to tutor children in a Washoe County School District (WCSD) elementary classroom. During orientation, students hear from community partners about student needs and diversity awareness, such as children in foster care, learning disabilities and Native American culture. Participants critically reflect on their experience through group discussion and journalling.

Through this program students will:

  • Build comprehension of child development and learning environments.
  • Enhance their understanding of learning environments
  • Assist elementary students to meet their full potential

Upon completion of this program, students will receive a certificate from WSCH and the OSLCE, as well as a letter for their resume that outlines the program, the knowledge gained, and skills built through their service.

During orientation, students will hear more about the program components. They will hear from Washoe Country School District about the variety of service placements they can choose from, as well as fill out their background check.
