This quarter we are shining our spotlight on four community organizations in need this holiday season. Please read below about each organization and consider contributing to these great organizations. Donations can be brought to The Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement in Thompson 101 or the ASUN office on the third floor of the Joe Crawley Student Union.

The Veterans Guest House is a "home away from home" for U.S. military service veterans receiving medical treatment and for families of veterans who are receiving care at facilities in the Reno/Sparks, Nevada area. It is located within two miles of three of the four major medical facilities. During 2011 they provided just under 4,000 guest nights of lodging. In just the first three months of 2012 they provided 1,236 guest nights of lodging-a huge increase over any other year. They are currently in need of men's socks and slippers.
SAFF in Reno, Nevada, a 501c3 non-profit organization, focuses on the education of children and teens in foster care, as well as that of their birth parents and foster parents, by creating and facilitating educational programs for reducing the catastrophic statistic of:
They currently offer a variety of educational programs including Foster Parents and Birth Parents Working Together, Health and Happiness, Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy (Horse Therapy), and In-Home/After School Academic Tutoring. They are requesting stocking stuffers and gift cards for bookstores for the children and teens they work with.
The Ridge House, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, substance abuse treatment and re-entry organization located in Reno, Nevada. Our therapeutic programs are designed to change the behavior of offenders, prevent future offending and contribute toward the overall safety of our community. Since 1981 The Ridge House has been helping the former offender become restored socially, spiritually and emotionally. We exist to help those serious about changing their lives. They are requesting kitchen supplies for their residential program.
The Immigration Assistance Program of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada works in conjunction with the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to identify those individuals who qualify for legal status here in the United States and where appropriate, assist them through the paperwork and legal process. They are requesting items for their waiting room including crayons, coloring books and sketch pads.
