- Career Options: Chemists are trained to find creative solutions to real-world problems with a quantitative and deep theoretical understanding of the microscopic world and of the tools used to probe and manipulate it. A chemistry major is also excellent preparation for graduate study in medicine and the health professions, law, government policy, and applied science and engineering.
Chemistry majors complete courses providing a solid background in the physical sciences and mathematics, together with a sequence of courses in general, organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. A sequence of chemistry courses in general, organic, and either analytical or biophysical chemistry provide a general background in the physical sciences and mathematics. Lecture classes are complemented by laboratories that give hands-on experience in chemical methods and instrumentation.
