Zouave Jacket
The Zouave jacket was styled after the military coats of an elite corp of French cavalry and came to popularity in 1859. The jacket's original characteristics were: a close fit at the neckline, sleeves which were round and flowing and it was trimmed with braid in a military fashion. In December 1859, Godey's Lady's Book highlighted the appearance of the Zouave jacket on the fashion scene. By 1863, the jacket achieved great popularity and acceptance as it was worn by Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III of France. There are some who say that the fashion became popular because it reminded the Empress of her homeland, Greece???. (deMarly, p.87-90)
