The Hoop Skirt: Changing Fashion

Again, the release from the weight of multiple petticoats helped make the hoop or cage a highly desirable item in the fashionable woman's wardrobe. By keeping the petticoat away from the legs--or in the politically correct term for the times, "limbs"---walking was easier. Cages were much lighter. And another good reason for adopting the cage, it cut down on the volume of laundry.

Other forms of the fashion industry became important with the advent of the hoop. Drawers or pantalets were now a necessity to protect a woman from the drafts and men getting a glimpse of too much of a woman's temptations. There is a new emphasis on colored undergarments, petticoats and stockings.
