The skirt is finely gathered to the waistband. Note the asymmetrical, wrap closure of the skirt. A long pocket opening is slashed into the skirt half way between the center front and the side seam. She would have reached her pockets through this opening. The long, full skirt would have provided its wearer an acceptable degree of modesty and protection for her legs. The hem is several inches deep and has no extra stiffening or support.
