Eilley Orrum Bowers

There are many myths which surround Mrs. Eilley Orrum Bowers, who was also known as the "Queen of the Comstock" and the "Washoe Seeress". As one of the most important women in the development of the state, it is important to recognize and respect her role in the development of the region.

Allison Orrum was born on the 6th of September 1826 in the Scottish lowlands. At the age of 15, she married Stephen Hunter in the Church of Scotland. During their marriage, Stephen converted to Mormonism. Apparently, he never insisted that she convert at any time. In 1850, she and Stephen journeyed to Salt Lake City. No one knows why the marriage ended in divorce.
