Corsets: Advertisements

Beginning in 1866, Godey's Lady's Book ran advertisements for Burger's Celebrated French Pattern Corsets available by mail order. They promised speedy delivery to the Ladies of the Northwest. Listed pricing varied with the choice of fabric, the number of bones and the finish. In1868, Godey's also ran advertisements for Thomson's "Glove-Fitting" Corset. You will see the shape for both of these corsets has narrowed considerably over the hips. There were also other companies that advertised in other publications, including Mme. Demorest, who retailed several styles of corsets and breast protectors. French patterning and fabric seem to be shared by all companies.
