H. K. Clapp: Philanthropy
Ms. Clapp used her investment in several mining operations, including the Belcher mine, to support not just her travel, but her school as well. Later in life, as with other Nevadan's in the boom and bust cycle of mining, these investments caused some economic problems for her.
We also remember Hannah Clapp for her political support. In October 1861, Ms. Clapp and Mrs. Margaret Ormsby heard of the need for chairs by the House of Representatives.
"To the Honorable Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Nevada territory-- Sirs, Having learned that the Represatives Chamber is not properly furnished with chair for the conveniences of the Representatives, we beg leave to present to that honorable body a sufficient number of chairs for their use. Yours respectfully, Mrs. M.A. Ormsby Miss H.K. Clapp (Marsh, p. 115)
A resolution followed which thanked them and invited them to sit in the House of Representative for the remainder of the session.
Miss Clapp was also involved with two important legislative acts in 1875 which incorporated Carson City and provided $23,000 for improvement to the Capitol Grounds. (Totten, p. 170) In addition to this level of involvement, Ms. Clapp and Ms. Babcock submitted a bid to supply the fencing for the Capitol grounds. Their bid of $5,500 was accepted. The fencing was ordered from Robert Wood and the Company of Philadelphia which arrived by August 7, 1875. (Totten, p. 170)
