Amelia Jenks Bloomer

For some women, regardless of age, there needed to be a practical solution to the restrictions of women's typical style of dress. Stepping a little further back into time, meet Amelia Bloomer. Her choice of clothing made an impact on the American consciousness. The issues revolving around the appropriateness of the look and by her crusade for women's dress reform provoked nationwide controversy. According to some the issues were "more hotly argued over than the slavery issue." (Archer. The Unpopular Ones, p.101) When Amelia visited England in 1851, the controversy became international. (Laver, p. 180) For many "Amelia Bloomer's Costume" became the symbol for not just reform dressing, but the feminist movement at large.
