The Roles of Participants

Faclitator: hand out case information at appropriate times during discussion. Assures that each member of the group is participating. Use prompting and monitor how accurately the group is addressing the objectives.

Students: participate actively in group discussions. Give and accept constructive criticism, admit knowledge of deficiencies. Complete their independant study assignments. Provide an honest evaluation of their activities, those of other students, the facilitator and the group as a whole.

Remember: (graphic here to illustrate remember)

  • The emphasis is on learning, not on teaching
  • Responsibility for learning lies with the student, not with the facilitator
  • Most of the real learning takes place outside of the small group sessions. The group session serves to clarify and provide perspective.
  • Students will learn more than they discuss in the group sessions.
  • Facilitators should remain non-directive and intervene only when necessary.
