Grading Criteria

Final grades for this course will be based upon student performance in four areas: participation, web-page design, annotated bibliography and an exploration project.

Participation (which will account for 15% of the final grade) will be determined by student contributions in class discussions and by student postings to the class listserver. Discussions taking place on the listserver can focus upon material covered in class lectures, readings or experiences you've had in your own classroom.

The annotated bibliography (25% of grade) will consist of weekly submissions (less than a page in length) that review an Internet website you have found that can be used to teach language arts.
Each weekly submission must include the site's name, URL (address), author, and a brief description of how you would use the site as a teaching resource. These sites will be added to the language arts links page on the Journalism 506 web site.

We will work on the web-page design assignment (25% of grade) throughout the semester. Your task will be to create the home page for your school or class that will be posted on the Nevada on-line student newspaper. Details on this assignment will be further explained during the semester.

The exploration project will account for the largest portion of your grade (35%) and, as a result, should reflect ample time and effort in the final product. Your task will be to identify something in your community that you find interesting, fun, bizarre, exciting or wrong -- something thought provoking that you would want to know more about. You will research your topic using methods presented inclass and will submit a piece of writing that best matches writing style to the content and audience.

The following grading scale will be used in this course:

92-100%= A
84-91%= B
76-83%= C
68-75%= D
Below 68%= F
