Introduction

Copper has been used by human beings for at least 7,000 years. The island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean was a major source of copper for the ancient world. Our word copper came from cuprum, the Roman name for Cyprian metal. Copper's symbol on the Periodic Chart of the Elements is Cu, an abbreviation of cuprum. Its atomic number is 29, and its atomic weight is 63.546.
