Availibility
of Programs
Find out if your school has a reading teacher
or literacy specialist. If so, contact this
person to see what is available at your
childs school for children who have
difficulties learning to read and write. If there
is no reading teacher, contact the principal or
school counselor. You might also contact your
local school district reading coordinator to find
out about other district programs.
Washoe County, Nevada
Washoe County has many opportunities for
students who need help in the areas of reading
and writing. Several schools in Washoe County
have had Reading Buddies programs. Presently, you
will find Reading Buddies programs at three
schools: Westergard Elementary School; Agnes
Risley Elementary School; Alice Smith Elementary
School.
You are welcomed to call the individual
schools for more information.
University Programs
Another possibility is to contact your local
university to see if they have any literacy
programs available for children. A good place to
look is in the College of Education. The Center
for Learning and Literacy at the University of
Nevada is one place for students to go to receive
individual or small group help. They can be
reached at 702/784-4951.
Other Locations
As we write more about our programs, we have
had more requests for information. Several of us
are working with school districts and talking to
individual teachers to help them set up similar
programs. Baker County School District in Florida
is one interested district, and we welcome them
to this website.
