Student Scholarships

The Sanford Center for Aging normally offers scholarships and stipends to University of Nevada, Reno undergraduate, graduate, medical and professional students to encourage them to consider careers in geriatric and gerontology specialties. Scholarships are for one year. Recipients may apply for renewals. NO SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE 2009-2010 academic year.

  • Grade-point average of 3.25 or better
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Interest in gerontology or geriatrics

Advertised deadlines are strictly observed to ensure fair treatment for all applicants.

Scholarship recipients are required to:

  • Attend the Sanford Center for Aging Award Recognition Ceremony;
  • Attend the Sanford Center for Aging Scholarship Luncheon;
  • Attend at least one Sanford Center for Aging educational activity per semester, such as luncheon lectures and colloquia. (See the events calendar);
  • Submit a letter of appreciation to the Foundation Scholarship Committee upon receipt of the scholarship.

Selection Committee

The Sanford Center for Aging Scholarship Review Committee is responsible for producing and forwarding a ranked list of nominees to the Director of the Sanford Center for Aging.

Faculty Scholar Award

Created in 2004, the Sanford Center for Aging’s Faculty Scholar Award honors University of Nevada, Reno faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the fields and gerontology or geriatrics through their teaching, scholarship, research, public service or practice.

Requirements

  • University of Nevada, Reno faculty status for a minimum of five years;
  • Distinguished leadership and active engagement at the time of nomination in the advancement of geriatrics and/or gerontology;
  • Endorsements from two current faculty members and the dean of the college/school.

Distinguished Professor of the Humanities

Ken Lucey, currently Chair of the Philosophy Department, has been named the Sanford Distinguished Professor of the Humanities for the next two academic years. The award means that Lucey will continue his involvement in Core Humanities teaching, will deliver public humanities lectures, and will focus some of his teaching and research interests on issues of aging. Support for this Professorship comes from the NEH/Core Humanities Endowment and from the Sanford Center for Aging.
