Legacy Corps
Legacy Corps is the new sister program to the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Sponsored by the AmeriCorps program of Corporation for National and Community Service and by the University of Maryland, Legacy Corps helps hundreds of people in our community who desperately need a break from their caregiving responsibilities.
Legacy Corps members go into the home and stay with the caregiver’s loved one while the caregiver takes a few hours to go to a movie, shopping, lunch with a friend, or some other activity. This assistance, provided free of charge, is key to reducing stress and improving the health of the caregiver while preventing institutionalization of the loved one.
Volunteers provide:
- Approximately 12-15 hours of service per week, either in the home giving the caregiver time off from responsibilities or attending training sessions as needed;
- Do whatever the person being cared for enjoys: reads, watching television, listening to their favorite music, playing cards, or just visiting with them
- Attend a monthly reflective meeting;
- Members do not medicate, bathe or toilet the client or deal with any financial matters.
Volunteers receive:
- Eligibility for a stipend of $150 per month;
- Up to $25 reimbursement for mileage per month;
- Comprehensive professional training, including CPR;
- An educational award of $1,250 for those who complete 450 hours during their term of service (typically 12 months).
