University program offers free medication reviews to seniors taking multiple drugs
Almost one out of every three times when a senior citizen is hospitalized it’s because of a preventable medication–related problem. Those who are 60-years-old or older and are taking at least five prescription drugs can now guard against potentially dangerous medication errors by getting a free medication review.
Under the Medication Therapy Management program, administered by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Sanford Center for Aging, a team of certified geriatric pharmacists analyze prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal supplements and other nutraceuticals for safety and effectiveness. The team then reports back to the patient and the patient’s doctor(s). The report provides therapeutic recommendations and identifies any potential drug interactions, duplications and inappropriate medication use.
The Medication Therapy Management program is funded by the Nevada Division for Aging Services and a gift from the Marion G. Thompson Trust.
