Get Help

The Web is a gateway to endless information on caregiving and aging issues. Some of the most reliable resources, and those most pertinent to Nevada residents, are listed here:

Nevada Geriatricians

Even though elders consume more than 50 percent of health-care resources, less than 1 percent of all health-care professionals are certified geriatricians. (Geriatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the problems of aging.)

The Sanford Center for Aging is trying to develop a directory of geriatricians and other physicians in Nevada accepting new patients.

In the meantime, if you are looking for a geriatrician in Washoe County, try calling Jeanie Catterson, executive director, at the Washoe County Medical Society, at (775) 825-0278.

Medicare and Nevada SHIP

Through the Nevada State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) Medicare beneficiaries in Nevada can receive information, counseling and assistance from a statewide network of volunteers.

You can contact SHIP by calling 1-800-307-4444 or in Las Vegas by calling 486-3478.

More information about SHIP can be found online at http://www.nvaging.net/ship/ship_main.htm.

Medicare has a search tool on their website to find a doctor in you area who accepts Medicare. You can access the search tool from: http://www.medicare.gov/Physician.

Nevada Care Connection

Through the Nevada Care Connection website individuals can obtain referrals and determine eligibility for medical and other services and find a wealth of other information. Nevada Care Connection also produces a quarterly newsletter for caregivers, Information Portal.
