Who Needs a Protocol?

We get asked this question all of the time. The easiest way to decide if you need a protocol is to ask yourself the following questions.

  1. Will I be using animals or animal tissues?
  2. Will I be doing any animal behavioral studies?
  3. Does my work include trapping of animals?
  4. Does my work include any type of handling of the animals?
  5. If a field study will any animals be impacted or disrupted by my work?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions you will probably need a protocol. Most researchers do not think about fish, birds, reptile studies being required to have a protocol if they are field studies. If there is any doubt please contact the office of Laboratory Animal Medicine at 784-4874.
