Research at External Sites

University of Nevada, Reno investigators may ask for an external IRB to serve as the IRB of Record for human subjects research. The research activity must take place at the external facility. If it is a shared activity here at the University and the external location the University of Nevada, Reno IRB may decline such requests. The investigator would submit an application for review by the University of Nevada, Reno IRB even if this results in multiple IRB reviews.

Note: Investigators may not ask to rely on an external IRB for protocols previously reviewed by a University of Nevada, Reno IRB.

Use of Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB)

The Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB) is a fully accredited, independent IRB that has provided review and oversight of industry-sponsored, industry-initiated clinical protocols for University investigators at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) since November 2, 2007. The WIRB serves as the IRB of record for those protocols they review on behalf of the University. Protocols previously reviewed and/or approved by the University of Nevada, Reno Biomedical IRB may not be transferred to WIRB. The University has not contracted with any other independent IRBs.

Read the instructions in the How to Submit to WIRB document and submit the completed UNR-WIRB Cover Sheet.

Using External IRBs with Existing University of Nevada, Reno IRB Authorization Agreements

The University of Nevada, Reno has IRB Authorization Agreements in place with the following institutions:

  • University of Las Vegas (UNLV)
  • Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada
  • University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC)

These agreements allow investigators conducting the entire research activity at these sites to ask that the UNLV, Renown, or UMC IRB serves as the IRB of record for a human subjects research study. The purpose is to eliminate duplicate review of the IRB when University of Nevada, Reno is only involved because the research is being conducted by a University of Nevada, Reno student or faculty member.

Read University of Nevada, Reno IRB guidance II2H GD1 Reviews by External IRBs and submit a completed Request to Rely on an External IRB form, one copy of the UNLV protocol application and consent form, and grant materials if applicable.
