Student of the Year: Andrea Esp
STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENT
Andrea Esp, MPH '11, passed a national exam administered through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. and is now a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). To pass the exam, one must meet standards of competence to "assess individual and community needs for health education; plan effective health education strategies, interventions, and programs; implement health education strategies, interventions, and programs; conduct evaluation and research related to health education; administer health education strategies, interventions, and programs; serve as a health education resource person; communicate and advocate for health and health education."
Yingjia "Sophie" Chen, MPH '11, recently received her certification in SAS base programming for SAS 9. To pass the exam, an individual demonstrates an ability to "import and export raw data files; manipulate and transform data; combine SAS data sets; create basic detail and summary reports using SAS procedures; and identify and correct data, syntax and programming logic errors." This certification will help her as she continues her studies in PhD program in Epidemiology at UC Davis.
Lee Salgado, MPH '11, recently passed a national exam administered through the National Environmental Health Association and is now a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS). Individuals with the REHS credential show competency in environmental health issues, direct and train personnel to respond to routine or emergency environmental situations, and provide education to their communities on environmental health concerns. Ms. Salgado has completed her MPH internship in the Washoe County District Health Department in the Solid Waste Management Program under the mentorship of R. Jeanne Rucker, Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor. Ms. Salgado “loves garbage” and hopes to have a long career in environmental health after her graduation in May 2011.
