Epidemiological Analysis

Descriptive epidemiology, measures of association, analysis of categorical data and contingency tables, pair-matched analysis, stratified analysis, power analysis and sample size determination as well as regression techniques for multivariable and multivariate analysis including analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multiple regression, loglinear analysis, Poisson regression and multiple logistic regression. Training in SAS programming and use of statistical software packages will be an integral component of the course.

CHS 780

Biostatistics in Public Health

Underlying principles and methods of biostatistics in public health research including basic probability theory and distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, t-tests, analysis of variance, nonparametric tests, contingency table analyses, multiple linear and logistic regressions.

Education

Ph.D. in biostatistics, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Research Interests

Dr. Hsieh's research work covers both methodological developments and their applications. His main research area is lifetime distribution/life table analysis. This includes construction of period life tables using spline interpolation and wavelet analysis and the development of distributional models for the two extremes of the lifespan. His current research interests are in statistical inference of point processes, particularly the counting processes martingale inference and regression analysis in survival analysis, epidemiology and demography. He is also interested in epidemiological study designs and development of statistical inference methods for different designs (including clinical trials). He has a long working experience in epidemic models, population models and demographic analysis. His research in these areas has earned him several individual awards, including National Health Scientist Award and Senior Public Health Scientist Award in Canada.

Statistical Consulting

For more than three decades Dr. Hsieh has provided statistical consulting services covering most areas of applied statistics including stochastic modelling, multiple, logistic and smooth regression techniques especially spline methods, linear and non-linear modelling, multivariate statistical data analysis, design and analysis of clinical trials and epidemiologic studies, time series analysis, Bayesian methods, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, life table analysis, demographic methods, bootstrapping and computer simulation.
