CHS 345

Ethics and Professionalism in Public Health

This required course for CHS majors is designed to introduce the student to professional and ethical principles and conduct within the field of public health. Students learn the strategies for a "professional presentation of self" and importance of ethical guidelines and decision making in conduct of research and practice.

CHS 426/626

Medical Anthropology

Application of anthropological theories and methods to questions of human health, illness, medicine and healing. It is a valuable class for all who are interested in cross-cultural issues of health and diversity in health care.

CHS 427/627

Toxic Communities and Public Health

Examination of how communities are affected by environmental toxins and how contaminated communities organize and respond to health effects of such environmental processes.

Education

Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley with an emphasis on Medical Anthropology – degree conferred in 1987.

M.A. in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982

Research Interests

Medical anthropology, inherited disorders, stigma, health compensation, rural health, health effects of atomic radiation, veteran health and compensation.

Compensating for Health: The Act and Outcome of Atomic Testing. (2002). Human Organization, 61, 41-50. 

Articles on Genetic Prophecy, Waiting for the Family Legacy, Discredited Inheritance and The Stumbling Disease appeared in Social Science and Medicine, Human Organization and Practicing Anthropology. Two articles were reprinted in Medical Anthropology and Medical Sociology texts.

Personal
