Program Description

An Integrative Clinical Science Model

Students are exposed early to both research and practical training. Unlike many programs, clinical supervision is done directly by all Clinical faculty rather than being delegated to others or limited to only certain faculty.

Collegiality

The relationship between faculty and students is friendly and respectful. The program is small and intimate, and students are regarded as junior colleagues. We are a humane program that works to see its students meet high standards of scholarship and clinical skill. Almost all students admitted to the program complete it (our attrition rate is 7%). Unhealthy competition between students is discouraged.

Intellectual Atmosphere

We emphasize the analysis of serious intellectual and clinical issues. We are quite research oriented but we are not a mindless "research mill." The faculty are interested in developing students who are critical thinkers, skilled clinicians, and creators of new knowledge dealing with fundamental issues in psychology and its application. The program emphasizes the importance of theory and philosophy, and their link to actual clinical interventions more than most programs.

Theoretical Orientation

The predominant orientation is behavioral with a particular appreciation of understanding that behavior occurs in a context. Though our faculty value empirical and behavioral approaches, the program addresses a very broad set of clinical problems and encourages students to think critically about the principles of change rather than the techniques.

Diversity

Our program is a rich mix of cultures, races, nationalities, and ages. We pride ourselves on fostering attitudes of tolerance and respect, whether it be toward clients or toward each other.
