Faculty
F. Donald Tibbitts Distinguished Teacher Award
Deans are asked to recommend their faculty for this award during the fall semester. Supporting materials are submitted by the nominee to the Distinguished Teacher Committee. Committee members visit each nominee’s classroom while class is in session. The top awardee receives $5,000 and the 2 runner ups receive $2,500. The award is funded by the UNR Foundation, ASUN, and the Office of the Provost.
Foundation Professor
The Foundation Professor program was developed in 1983 to recognize and salute the university’s professors for outstanding achievements, particularly in research and teaching. The award is for a three-year period during which the individuals selected receive a $5,000 annual stipend to be used in professional endeavors, a one course per semester reduction in teaching load, and recognition at the annual Foundation Banquet in early fall. In addition, Foundation Professors’ names appear in the University’s Honor Court. Candidates for the award must meet the established criteria and are nominated by their deans in the spring of each year. Funding is provided by the UNR Foundation and the Office of the Provost.
Distinguished Outreach Faculty Award
In recognition of the importance of faculty outreach, the Distinguished Outreach Faculty Award program began in 2004. The award was developed to recognize and salute the university’s faculty for outstanding outreach activities. Academic and administrative faculty on a half-time or greater appointment with the University of Nevada, Reno are eligible. Nominees for the award are solicited from deans in January of each year. Applications are judged by a selection committee on the overall impact of their work, the sustained nature of their contributions, and the collaboration fostered by their activities. Recognition is given to the winner and two runners up. The winner will receive a $5,000 award, a plaque, and recognition at the annual Honor the Best Ceremony in May. Funding is provided by the UNR Foundation and the Office of the Provost.
Instructional Enhancement Grants
Funds projects that promote excellence in instruction and/or projects related to assessing student learning. Grants are from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Proposals are due in early October. Funds are provided by the Core Board, University Libraries, and Office of the Provost.
International Activities Grants
Funds are provided to enhance and promote the development of curriculum, programs, research, and other creative efforts that have a significant international dimension. Emphasis will be placed on proposals identifying a meaningful result that contributes to the international strengths of the UNR campus. A high priority will be placed on seeding new projects that promise significant future developments involving international activities. Matching funds are highly desirable, but are not required. The maximum grant normally awarded is $2,000. Applications to support projects to be carried out during the spring semester are due in early November. Applications to support projects to be carried out during the summer or fall semesters are due in mid-February. Funds are provided by the Office of the Provost.
Regent’s Academic Advisor Award
The Nevada Regents’ Academic Advisor Award is given annually to faculty or staff members with distinguished records of student advisement. Two awards are granted annually, one for undergraduate advisement and one for graduate advisement. Full-time faculty, professional staff, and classified staff who provide academic advising as part of their regular or primary assignment are eligible for the award. Although these awards are intended for individuals, groups who have made outstanding contributions in academic advising may be recognized as well. Recipients of the award receive a check for $5,000 and an invitation to a reception sponsored by the Regents toward the end of the spring semester. Nominations are usually called for in the early fall and can be made by any member of the university community. The award recipients are announced in early spring.
Regent’s Teaching Award
The Nevada Regents Teaching Award is given annually to a faculty member with a distinguished record of teaching. One award is given annually to a full-time faculty member who provides instruction as their primary assignment at UNLV, UNR, or NSCH and DRI faculty who provide instruction as part of their regular assignment. Each of these institutions is entitled to forward three nominations for the award. Nominations can be made by any UCCSN employee or student, using the published criteria for the award. This is a prestigious award, and the winner receives a special medal and a check for $5,000. Nominations are made in early fall each year, with the winner being announced in early spring.
