Fine Arts

Department of Art

The Master of Fine Arts degree is the terminal degree in studio art and serves as the entry credential to college-level teaching and/or working as a practicing artist in the fine and applied arts. The Department of Art offers study in the areas of two- and three-dimensional art selected from but not limited to the following: ceramics, digital media, drawing, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. The studio program is supported by a strong emphasis in the areas of art history, theory and criticism. The MFA degree requires 60 credit hours and is structured to be a cross-disciplinary program to ensure that students are not bound by a singular art discipline/medium; students will have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to explore new possibilities in the search for the most effective visual format for the expression of their ideas. The program’s identity as a student-centered place of learning and creative inquiry is reinforced by rigorous academic and studio practices that promote highly original scholarly research and art making. Emphasis is placed upon the creation of artwork with an understanding of its intellectual, conceptual, and social contexts.
