Department of English
We offer graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Arts (M.A.) in English, Master of Arts in the Teaching of English (M.A.T.E.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English. The department also participates in the M.A. in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) program housed in the Department of Educational Specialties. The Master of Arts in the Teaching of English program is designed primarily for elementary and secondary teachers of literature, language, and writing. It offers two emphases, in literature and in writing. The M.A.T.E. degree does not, however, lead to a Nevada public schools teaching certificate for grades K-12; such certification is available only through the College of Education. Most students in the M.A.T.E. program already have received this certification.
