The Basque Tutorial Ph.D. program is intended to provide students in the humanities and social sciences with the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies emphasizing Basque-related courses and dissertation research. The successful student will be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Basque Studies with an emphasis on the subject matter of one of the participating departments—anthropology, foreign languages and literatures, geography, political science and history—at the University of Nevada, Reno. Consequently, the degree will be in Basque Studies and the student’s transcript will list as major area of study Basque Studies (Anthropology), Basque Studies (History), etc.

The College of Liberal Arts contains the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, as well as the School of the Arts and the new School of Social Research and Justice Studies.
A liberal arts education at the University of Nevada, Reno emphasizes inquiry, discovery and openness to new ideas and perspectives. Through intensive study of a major field and broad exposure to other disciplines, liberal arts students develop intellectual curiosity, research skills, eagerness to discuss difficult questions and the ability to define and solve complex problems.
