Environmental Engineering

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers have taken an increasingly important role in the application of engineering and scientific principles used to protect and preserve human health and the environment and to improve the quality of life.

Environmental engineers design and provide facilities for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastes. They design, construct and operate treatment systems that purify water for drinking, industrial and recreational uses. They develop and implement models that describe the transport and removal of contaminants in the environment. Solid, toxic and hazardous waste management strategies are also developed and implemented by environmental engineers. Water resources and management, environmental policy, environmental chemistry and biology, systems ecology and wetland ecology are also important aspects of the environmental engineering profession.
