With a strong commitment to the arts and humanities, as well as to developing the essential skills of analysis, inquiry, research, and expression, the English department prepares students for a variety of professions that range from teaching to law, publication to management, public administration to technical writing. In the major, students can specialize in literature, writing, language and linguistics, or secondary teaching. In the minor, students can specialize in literature, writing, language and linguistics, secondary teaching, literature and the environment, dramatic literature, or teaching English to speakers of other languages.

College of Liberal Arts
The College of Liberal Arts contains the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, as well as the School of the Arts and the new School of Social Research and Justice Studies.
A liberal arts education at the University of Nevada, Reno emphasizes inquiry, discovery and openness to new ideas and perspectives. Through intensive study of a major field and broad exposure to other disciplines, liberal arts students develop intellectual curiosity, research skills, eagerness to discuss difficult questions and the ability to define and solve complex problems.
