Marsha Read was named Interim Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School in July 2008. Reporting to the president and provost, Read oversees the administrative processes related to the University's sponsored research, including developing, coordinating and stimulating research and creative activity at Nevada, as well as ensuring research compliance with all applicable laws. As Dean of the Graduate School, Read identifies strategic issues affecting graduate education at the University, and has oversight of graduate student progress and the rules and regulations governing graduate education at Nevada.
Prior to her current position, Read served from 2005-2008 as Associate Vice President for Research and Associate Dean of the Graduate School. Read joined the Graduate School's administration as Associate Dean in 2000. From 1996-2000, Read was chairperson of the Department of Nutrition at the University. Her career as a faculty member at Nevada began in 1973.
In addition to a research career that has included publication of more than 50 refereed articles in the area of health and nutrition and serving as principal investigator or co-principal investigator of 10 federally or state-funded research projects, Read has also supervised more than 25 master's degree projects of her former students. She is a former chairperson of the campus' Faculty Senate (1994-95) and the Graduate Council (1992). In 1999-2000, Read served as chairperson of the University's NCAA Certification Steering Committee. Read received her B.S. degree in Home Economics Education with a secondary emphasis on nutrition/dietetics from the University of Nevada, Reno. She earned her master's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and was awarded her Ph.D. in Nutrition from Utah State University.
