March 2006
University of Nevada, Reno Police Services hosted Violence Against Women Investigations training for law enforcement and related professionals on March 21, 22 and 23rd, 2006 at Boomtown Casino Resort in Verdi. This year’s instructor’s and topics included:
- The Affects of Sexual and Physical Violence on Families by Olga Trujillo, JD, an attorney formerly of the US Department of Justice, and a survivor of family violence, Ms. Trujillo relates her personal experience with the trauma of living with violence on a daily basis, and the coping mechanisms victims use to survive. In her legal career, Ms. Trujillo was instrumental in creating legislation regarding family violence and working with federal grant programs to make funding available to agencies who deal with these crimes.
- Hollywood vs. the Real World of Sexual Assault Investigations by Chief Karin Montejo of Miami-Dade Police Department. Ms. Montejo will discuss how Hollywood and the popularity of criminal investigations programs have altered the public’s view of how police should do their jobs. Citing real life cases, Ms. Montejo will emphasize the importance of careful and thorough investigations in the “real world” where crimes are not solved in less than an hour.
- Intimate Partner Stalking – New Strategies by Lt. Brad Simpson of Las Vegas Metro Police and Lori Fralick of Reno Police Department. The news is filled with stories of homicide between intimate partners, but did you know that 90% of women who are murdered by a man with whom they’ve had an intimate relationship are first stalked by that person? Lt. Simpson and Ms. Fralick will discuss the challenges in working with stalking victims and present strategies to educate victims in preserving their own safety and building a case against the offender.
The training was funded by a grant from the Nevada Attorney General’s Office under the federal STOP Violence Against Women Program, and was open to all Nevada agencies working in law enforcement, victim services and related fields. Over 450 police, courts and corrections and victim services personnel attended over the three day period. For more information contact University Police Services at 775-784-4013.
